Brentford School for Girls proudly embraces Autism Awareness Month this April 2024, by highlighting their unwavering commitment to understanding and supporting children with autism spectrum disorder (ASC). Recognising the importance of early diagnosis and support, the school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) centre is at the forefront of providing targeted assistance to students, ensuring they thrive both academically and socially.

Autism, a lifelong condition that affects social communication and interaction, is addressed with the utmost care and professionalism at Brentford School for Girls. The school’s dedicated SEN team, led by SENCo Ms. Frances Dutton, offers individualised support plans tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. This approach not only aids in academic achievement but also enhances life skills essential for personal development.

To have an ASD centre in mainstream girls’ schools is very rare, yet, as Marais Leenders Executive Head notes, a single-sex environment for autism ‘really works’!

The SEN register meticulously tracks the progress of students receiving additional support, ensuring they benefit from interventions designed to promote success. Early intervention and a focus on developing essential life skills are cornerstones of the SEN centre’s approach to supporting students with autism.

The Unit aims to promote each student’s self-confidence and self-esteem and will prepare each student to live independently as an adult, as a productive and happy member of society.

• We want your daughter to achieve her academic, personal and social potential
   
• Students in our centre have full access to the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 as well as specific programmes in Key Stage 4
   
• The unit has specially trained teachers and teaching assistants will support your daughter’s learning and progress in mainstream lessons or in the Unit either individually or as part of a small group
   
• Your daughter will also have access to other forms of support including Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy if on their Statement/EHCP.
